Activation Models

All Our Software Requires Activation

To use ScanToPDF in a production environment, license keys must be purchased. Those license keys must then be activated.

By default, the activation model is the Client Model using license keys applied to each PC where ScanToPDF is installed, as explained below.

We also offer two other activation models to suit all environments and requirements. The fixed and concurrent models use a licensing server (see below for more details) to activate the ScanToPDF software. The concurrent model enables keys to be shared amongst many users and is a very cost effective way of deploying the software to many users.

Client Model

When a purchase is made a license key is emailed

This key is applied to the software and verified electronically

If the license key verifies, the software will be activated

Learn more about this below.

License Server Concurrent Model

The License server on your premises activates the software in concurrent mode

Shared activation keys are provided by the license server to enable a number of concurrent users to run the software

Learn more about this below.

License Server Fixed Model

The License server on your premises activates the software in fixed mode

Activation keys are provided by the license server to enable a fixed number of users to run the software

What is the Client Model?

Client model licensing allows a customer to install the ScanToPDF software on a single computer and activate that software using a license key (or keys)

Keys are verified and the software is activated. Activation keys are unique to a computer

Features & Benefits

Client model activation has the following benefits:

✔ Simple system for converting trial software into activated software without the need to re-install
✔ License keys can be generated on this web site using the “License Keys” section of the website customer account and this facility is available 24 x 7 x 365 so there is no requirement for the customer to wait for keys to be provided by email
✔ All our software is delivered by download, no waiting for physical products to be delivered
✔ License keys can be de-activated and transferred to another machine to allow for hardware failure, operating system or hardware upgrades

What is the Concurrent Model?

Concurrent model activation, also called floating licenses or flexible-use licenses, allow customers to install the ScanToPDF software on an unlimited number of computers, terminal servers, or Citrix servers.

A license server running in your premises (which we provide FREE of charge with a purchase of concurrent model licenses) controls activation of the ScanToPDF software, enabling no more than the licensed number of users to simultaneously run the product.

When the software is running it will ask for an activation key from the license server. When the software is closed the key is returned back to the available pool of keys.

Features & Benefits

The concurrent activation model offers the following advantages to certain customers:

✔ It is well suited for customers wanting to install the ScanToPDF software on a terminal server or a Citrix server. Some IT departments prefer to deal with installing software only once on a terminal server, rather than having to install it on many computers throughout the organization.
✔ This model can also lessen the administrative burden of license management. With a concurrent-user license, there is only one license number to purchase and renew rather than many individual per-computer licenses to track and renew maintenance on.
✔ A concurrent-user license can be more economical than purchasing multiple computer licenses.
✔ Concurrent licensing allows sharing or floating of licenses among multiple users. This can provide companies with greater flexibility and cost efficiency.
✔ A concurrent user license includes OiC Remote Assurance, which means priority support, FREE major upgrades and most of all, peace of mind.

What is the Fixed Model?

Fixed model activation allow customers to install the ScanToPDF software on a limited number of computers. A license server running in your premises (which we provide FREE of charge with a purchase of a user pack) controls activation of the ScanToPDF software, replacing the need for individual activation keys to be applied to each machine that runs the ScanToPDF software.

Features & Benefits

The fixed activation model offers the following advantages to certain customers:

✔ It is well suited for customers wanting to install the ScanToPDF software on a fixed number of machines without needing to activate each machine individually.
✔ This model can also lessen the administrative burden of license & activation management. With the fixed model there is only one license number to purchase and renew rather than many individual per-computer licenses to track and renew maintenance on and so provides the ideal solution for faster deployment of a large number of licenses.
✔ Fixed model activation is suited to dynamic client environments, where computer systems running the software are changed or refreshed on a regular basis.

The Licensing Server

The Licensing Server is an optional FREE* licensing solution which we provide with a purchase of a License Server User Pack to help deployment of large numbers of client licenses (using 2 different models) and can be used to provide license activation for any of our products (Core products, plugins and solutions).

Technical Details For Administrators

The license server is a windows service that provides activation for ScanToPDF software using 2 different models, fixed model and concurrent model.

ScanToPDF software that has been configured to use the license server for activation (using either of the 2 models above) will connect to the licensing server to request activation keys for the modules in use. The license server will then return an activation key to the software to activate it.

In concurrent operation the activation is only used when the software is active. As soon as the software is closed the activation key is returned to a pool of keys, ready for another user.

In fixed operation the keys are allocated on a first come first serve basis, until all activation keys have been issued by the server. At this point no more keys can be issued until some of the keys have been manually released using the Licensing Supervisor utility which is part of the Licensing Server software suite.

Convert Client Model To License Server Fixed Models

Is it possible to convert from Client Model to License Server Fixed Models? – Yes it is. Once a small administration fee has been paid we will provide the licensing server software and the appropriate keys to enable conversion from client model to fixed model.

* The licensing server is provided FREE of charge as part of a purchase of fixed or concurrent model licenses. Client model licenses can be converted only after payment of a small administration fee (see above).
